Sustainable Earth Reviews primarily publishes overview papers, reviews, and evidence synthesis in addition to other unique article types (including Analyses, Debates and Guidelines) that support researchers, practitioners, policy makers and citizens in understanding the complexity of sustainability issues. The journal continues to publish papers containing primary research findings within the Analysis article type. 

What is Sustainable Earth Reviews?

With a primary focus on overview papers, Sustainable Earth Reviews aims to support researchers, practitioners, policy makers and citizens in understanding the complexity of topics in Sustainability, and in making sense of the great amount of data and information in Sustainability available today. 
  • Interdisciplinarity. Part of the mission of Sustainable Earth Reviews is to foster inter- and cross-disciplinary perspectives, which are at the heart of Sustainability research, through innovative content types that cater for a wider variety of contributions and voices.  
  • Concise highlights and practice recommendations. To support readers in navigating the greater availability of data and research, Sustainable Earth Reviews promotes conciseness and readability of content by featuring Science Highlights and Policy & Practice Recommendations after the abstract, and shorter, compelling content types like Debates
  • Bridging communities and audiences. The key aim of Sustainable Earth Reviews is to support real-world change by bridging the divide across communities – encouraging stronger ties and connections between academia and the general public, strengthening public understanding of science, influencing policy and altering social paradigms, and supporting citizen science.
  • Committed to supporting the SDGs. Publications in Sustainable Earth Reviews contribute to the overall mission of the SDGs.

Aims and scope

Sustainability is a global challenge identified by the United Nations. There is a uniform drive in every region of the world to invest time and money into developing solutions to meet this global challenge. Consequently, sustainability research is one of the fastest growing scientific fields today. 

Sustainable Earth Reviews aims to serve this field of research by publishing high-quality, open access analyses, overview papers, and reviews. As a community-focused journal, Sustainable Earth Reviews serves both the realms of academia and the general public and strives to strengthen the bond between them through traditional and innovative scientific communication. To further this vision, the journal will engage authors and readers in contemporary topics in the public eye or of critical socio-economic importance through the publication of thematic series. 

The journal particularly welcomes submissions that may influence policy or alter social paradigms. Sustainable Earth Reviews offers a variety of content types to cater to novel debates in the field, including: Analyses, Guidelines, Debates, Systematic Reviews and Protocols, and Scoping Reviews.
